Molino del Genil drives a project for technological upgrading to increase their productive capacity and improve the quality of extra virgin olive oil. With the support of CDTI Innovation and european funds ERDF, the company is facing the transition to a more efficient, sustainable and competitive, to strengthen further its internationalization in a key sector for the spanish and andalucian economy

Olive oil of quality cannot be achieved without respect for the environment

Born in 2006 in a strategic enclave between seville and Córdoba, Molino del Genil arose in response to the need for a modern olive press give output to the increasing production of olives in the area. Since then, has maintained a path of continued investment in the latest generation establishing itself as a key partner for local farmers and as an important actor in international markets of extra virgin olive oil.

“ Since the beginning, our priority was to provide quality service and differential treatment for farmers ”, recalls Miguel Ángel Miquel Serrano, director of the company. The shareholder structure of Molino del Genil retains its essence unfamiliar — with the family Martínez-sagrera as majority partner — and is complemented by the participation of agri-business and other strategic investors. The staffing establishment comprises 51 workers, with a technical team and qualified laboratory that reinforces the guidance of the innovative company.


Investment for growth in capacity and quality

The company is now in the project focusing on new investment to strengthen productive capacity and quality of olive press olive oil, an initiative that responds to a strategic: build additional facilities to prevent `saturation 'of the milling and ensuring excellence of the product.

Socio-economic impact on the territory

Beyond growth of the company, the project has a strong regional impact. it ’ s “ generate direct and indirect employment, energize sme suppliers and help to reduce unemployment in Écija, which is one of our major commitments as a local company, ” explains Miquel Serrano.

The developers works closely with farmers in the area, which will also benefit from the project. “ With greater capacity and support, we reduce download times and we achieved a better quality oil. That has a direct impact on them and strengthens our long-term relationship, ” she adds.

Innovation in the service of sustainability

Although Molino del Genil does not have a formal department r & D, it develops innovative projects in collaboration with universities and technological centres. One of the most recent, also supported by CDTI aid totalling eur over 621.000, focused on the development of natural biocides from olive grove, in line with trends in sustainability and reduction of phytosanitary.

The new investment project is no exception: integrated environmental sustainability criteria in all its phases. Includes most energy-efficient equipment, reduced water consumption, use of recyclable materials, waste minimization and a significant reduction in noise pollution.

“ sustainability is inseparable from our business ”, argues Miquel Serrano. “ Olive oil of quality cannot be achieved without respect for the environment. And technology is the tool that allows us to make this possible ”.

The director of production insists that the support of CDTI Innovation and the FEDER also has a social dimension: “ this type of funding contributes to job creation, technology transfer and brings tangible benefits to society, linked to sustainability and food quality ”.

Challenges and international projection

The establishment of relevant technical challenges, such as to achieve the levels of production and quality properly planned and integrate the new equipment. “ We are working with reliable suppliers and with a rigorous technical planning to ensure that everything works as we hope, ” explains.

For the future, the strategy of Molino del Genil is to strengthen its presence in international markets, where spanish oil is valued increasingly as a product of high value added. “ We Want to consolidate ourselves in the european Union and United states, but also to open up markets seeking oils premium quality at competitive prices, ” says.
