Ramón Jiménez, CEO and cofounder of UniSCool: “ The support of Innovation and CDTI european funds MRR has been key to position ourselves as a leader in intelligent liquid cooling ”
UniSCool leads a new generation of liquid cooling solutions directly the chip. Its technology, designed to respond to the thermal of microelectronics and artificial intelligence, has made the leap from laboratory to the market, placing the company among the most innovative in the sector with the support of the CDTI and Innovation of european funds MRR
In recent years, the increased demand for power-driven — data centers, artificial intelligence and microelectronics — has highlighted the limitations of traditional systems of cooling by air. The thermal management has become a key challenge: affects the performance of the teams and in energy efficiency and sustainability of the technological sector. In a scenario where each watt matters, to find solutions to improve the processing capacity without shoot energy consumption is more urgent than ever.
With this in mind, ramón Jiménez, current CEO, Universal founded Smart Cooling (UniSCool) together with Montse Villarrubí — current director of operations — and researchers Jérôme Barrau and Luc G. Fréchette. The company was born as a spin-off at the university of Lleida and Sherbrooke (Canada) after more than six years of joint investigation.
During that time, the team discovered that the liquid cooling the chip, combined with dynamic adaptation mechanisms, could make a big difference in energy efficiency and reliability. “ Our results showed that this technology could optimize the performance of systems, ” says microelectrónicos Jiménez. From there, decided to transform research in a business project with a clear goal: to lead a disruptive technology laboratory of the market.
Beyond the technological innovation, the success of UniSCool is also due to its multidisciplinary team, which combines scientific experience and entrepreneurial drive. “ This does not have been possible without our team, composed of doctors and engineers in microelectronics and thermal systems, as well as professionals in business strategy and development ”, points to the CEO. This mixture of profiles has been instrumental in making research in a real output and competitive.

Intelligent liquid cooling difference
With this technological base, UniSCool — with the support of CDTI Innovation — has developed a liquid cooling the chip systems designed for the new generation microelectrónicos. Unlike conventional air integrated heatsink, your system uses a cold plate copper and a distributor fluídico they channel the refrigerant fair to the points where there is more heat, thus improving the thermal transfer.
“ the most innovative system is that the line in real time the flow of cooling thermal according to demand of each component, ” explains Jiménez. “ In this way reducing energy consumption, and we have a thermal stability ”.
This approach avoids the sobreenfriamiento and at the same time increases the useful life of electronic components, a key advantage in the type of requirement.
Liquid cooling high performance of advanced electronic
The core of this technology is activated the fins a thermal, patented microestructuras bimetálicas respond alone to temperature changes. When the heat rises, fins become deformed to extract more energy; when low thermal load, return to their initial position and to reduce consumption. “ our heat sink auto-adaptativo regulates autonomously the flow of coolant and balanced performance and sustainability ”, add the CEO.
The testing of real data confirm the potential of the system, UniSCool-DC, which can reduce up to 80 per cent energy consumption for cooling and dispel administering of up to 2,800 W by zocalo. These results represent a significant leap in thermal efficiency, because they eliminate losses typical of traditional systems and adjust the pumping energy to the actual demand.
All that progress has been possible through the support of the CDTI Innovation through Neotec, initiative funded by the european funds recovery Mechanism and resilience (MRR). “ Thanks to such support, we have been able to transform years of research in industrial products ready for the market, validate prototypes in real environments and close partnerships with key actors in the sector, "he says Jiménez. “ furthermore, the support of the CDTI has provided us with international visibility and credibility to UniSCool as one of the companies of reference in intelligent liquid cooling, ” she adds.

European recognition of innovation
This momentum has been accompanied by a new milestone: the recognition of European innovation Radar, an initiative of the european commission which highlights the technologies with the greatest potential for impact. “ This recognition puts us on a map of the most disruptive of europe, ” says Jiménez, and adds: “ in addition, it reinforces the validity of our innovation and opens doors to european projects, international partnerships and new markets ”.
For this distinction UniSCool, goes beyond the prestige: it gives a guarantee that supports strategic their growth and global projection. In the words of its CEO, “ it is a momentum that encourages us to continue to lead the transformation of thermal technology from a perspective more efficient and sustainable ”.
Looking ahead
With a view to the next few years, UniSCool maintains a progressive expansion strategy. In the medium term, its aim is to consolidate the adoption of its european Data Centres and expand the programme “ Try & Buy ”, enabling companies to prove the liquid cooling the chip implemented final. At the same time, works to validate your system for applications of Edge Computing and Artificial intelligence, where the thermal management will be even more decisive.
In the long term, the company aims to position itself as a world leader in intelligent liquid cooling for electronic systems, with focus in catalan electrical, automotive and telecommunications.
“ we want to be a key player in the transition towards a more sustainable technological sector ”, underlines Jiménez. UniSCool Systems significantly reduce energy consumption of the data centres and basic infrastructures in the cloud computing, which today focus a significant part of the global carbon footprint.
Ultimately, the company wants to be consolidated as a synonym for efficiency and innovation, contributing to the next generation of digital technologies more powerful, reliable and environmentally friendly.
CDTI Innovation
The centre for technological development and innovation, CDTI E.P.E. is a public company under the ministry of Science, innovation and universities, whose goal is the promotion of technological innovation in business. The CDTI mission is to ensure that the business fabric english generates and transform knowledge into growth científico-técnico globally competitive, sustainable and inclusive. By 2024, within the framework of a new strategic plan, the CDTI provided more than $2.3 billion euros of support for business startups and spain.
