The Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), a Korean public research center specializing in electronics, semiconductor technologies and materials, is looking for Spanish companies to carry out an R&D project in the field of advanced materials for semiconductor encapsulation.

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC) and data centers is driving demand for high-bandwidth, energy-efficient optical interconnection technologies. Faced with these needs, conventional electrical interconnections present limitations related to signal losses, energy consumption and thermal management. In this context, glass is profiled as a promising material for the encapsulation of next generation semiconductors, thanks to its low dielectric loss, its dimensional stability, its optical transparency and its compatibility with the processing of large areas.

The aim of the project is to develop new materials and processes that integrate low-loss optical waveguides, through-glass (TGV), thin redistribution layers (RDL) and optical coupling structures for future photonic and electronic integration applications in a single package (CPO, Co-Packaged Optics).

The Spanish consortium will develop and optimize laser-processable low-loss photonic glass materials, as well as integrated optical waveguide writing and laser/material interaction control technologies. For its part, the Korean consortium will work on technologies of formation and integration of TGV, seed layers, high-aspect ratio copper filling, fine RDL and electrical interconnection, along with process equipment and structural and electrical validation.

Both sides will integrate these technologies into a glass core demonstrator with integrated waveguides and TGVs, which will include optical coupling interfaces between waveguide, fiber optics, photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and CPO components.

We are looking for Spanish companies with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Photonic vitreous materials, laser-capable glasses or functional optical glasses for integrated photonic applications.
  • Processing by femtosecond lasers, writing embedded optical waveguides and controlling the interaction between laser and glass.
  • Design of low-loss optical waveguides, optical coupling and characterization at wavelengths of 1310 and 1550 nm.
  • Photonic encapsulation, fiber optic coupling and photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and integration of optical functions into semiconductor encapsulation platforms.

The proposal aims to be submitted to the call for proposals 2026-2027 of the Korea-Spain Strategic Programme (KSSP), open until 28 January 2027.
