In an increasingly aware of the importance of health and physical performance, hydration has become a critical factor for both sporting elite to any person subject to prolonged efforts or high temperatures. However, the non-intrusive monitoring of the state of hydration remains a challenge: the current solutions are often expensive, vague or difficult to use in real time.

Address the need arises, a Sweanty spin-off del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones científicas (CSIC) that has transformed years of research in applied technology. As explains Laura Ortega, CTO and founding partner of Sweanty, “ we are a technology company specialised in intelligent moisture whose objective is to remove the dehydration in the field of sport and working life, contributing to health, security and a more responsible use of water ”.

This project has its origin dates back to five years of work at the institute of Barcelona Microelectronics CSIC, where the team founder — Anna "current, CEO of Sweanty, Laura Ortega, CTO and founding partner, professor Neus Sabaté and dr. Juan Pablo Esquivel — developed technology under the european project SUPERCELL. As recalls Ortega, “ following the good results achieved with the Hospital Sant Joan de déu and CAR of Sant Cugat, we decided to create Sweanty with the objective of bringing this technology in the market ”.

The startup shows, so, how science applied to everyday problems can generate a real impact in society, through technology transfer.

SweaTracker: technological evolution in the intelligent patch

In a market full of wearables metric that register, Sweanty bet for a little study Angle: personalized moisturizing through sweat. This evolution of the device will include the functionality to monitor the amount of fluid and salts lost through sweat, so that the user knows in real time their sweating and secretion of sales. “ This progress allows us to increase knowledge of the user and to help prevent dehydration, in addition to adapting their hydration to different environmental conditions ”, ensures Ortega.

The technological improvement is based on a detailed study of reservoir fluids within absorbent papers, similar to those of pregnancy tests, which detect large volumes of sweat in spaces with very low, even during intensive training up to one hour. In Addition, includes new electrochemical measurement methodologies to quantify different components of sweat, increasing the accuracy and usefulness of data.

The SweaTracker, moreover, is designed to provide precise control of hydration in demanding environments, where the loss of liquid and electrolytes can affect the performance or to health. Although initially focused on high-level sportsmen, technology has also demonstrated its usefulness in other environments.

As pointed out by the founding partner: “ We have seen in recent months that workers in warm environments can benefit from our technology, ensuring an Optimal hydration for each user ”.

In this way, not only optimizes the athletic performance but also contributes to the prevention of workplace risks, offering data, targets and plans of individualized hydration.

The support of the CDTI innovation through Neotec programme, funded by the european funds recovery Mechanism and resilience (MRR), has been key to the development of Sweanty. “ The support of CDTI has enabled us to overcome critical stages of development and make technological progress faster. Moreover, has brought us credibility with strategic partners and investors ”, ensures Ortega.

Thanks to this cooperation, the startup has not only been able to develop SweaTracker, but also become a benchmark for the application of science to the prevention of dehydration, combining technological innovation with social impact.
