Javier Álvarez Osuna, CIO of FishFarmFeeder: “ The platform for precision aquaculture won credibility with the support of CDTI and ERDF funds ”

The draft FishFarmFeeder AI4F of CDTI, co-financed by european funds ERDF and promotes aquaculture of precision at international level. Integrating Internet of things and artificial intelligence, transforms data in decisions that optimize resources, improve animal welfare and moving towards a more sustainable blue economy

FishFarmFeeder is an sme gallega founded in 2011 with the aim of transferring to the market the results of an r & D of the former research Galician. Of that first came the experience of automated solutions for food aquaculture farms on land, which eventually became the basis of the existing portfolio of products and services of the company. Today, with clients in over 30 countries and continued investment in innovation, is built on the ground of intelligent systems of aquaculture.

AI4F is one of its most ambitious projects cofinanced by CDTI, Innovation and european funds ERDF, which is promoting the transition to aquaculture as precision machining using The Internet of things (IoT acronyms in english),big dataautomatic and learning. To Javier Álvarez Osuna, Corporate CIO, “ public support has enabled us to accelerate research and technological development, to face with guarantees the challenges of designing a platform capable of transforming complex data operational decisions for intelligent and sustainable ”.

Although small dimension — 16 workers, including seven stable engaged in r & D projects — FishFarmFeeder has managed to grow in a highly specialised sector. The company develops its activity in three Areas: the intelligent solutions food, health and animal welfare, and specialized teams with value-added services, supported in their own software Aqua3F to ensure traceability and control in real time.

With this comprehensive model, the company has established an international business accounting for 80% of turnover, with presence in Europe, america, Asia and, in the near future, africa and Australia. Every year spent at around 10% of turnover in R & D. The company has evolved towards automation traditional aquaculture of precision, incorporating, machine vision sensors, predictive algorithms and robotized vaccination. “ our goal is that technology learn behavior and fish farming conditions, adding value to the producer and reducing the environmental impact, ” says Álvarez Osuna.

Data converted into decisions

AI4F represents a qualitative leap in the management of aquaculture. Your platform integrates data of sensors, feeders, cameras and biometric devices into useful information that optimizes food, animal welfare and forward to critical situations.

The solution combines the AI4F-Gateway, a device with low consumptionedge computing(informatics perimetral) for preprocesar data in origin, and a platform IIoT specific to aquaculture and estandariza hor. “ The main challenge is to ensure adaptation of the platform to productive environments. That is why we are working with producers, to integrate their needs in the algorithms and ensuring that the solution is flexible, scalable and easy to use, ” explains the CIO.

Sustainability as a central axis

Food represents the greatest economic and environmental cost of aquaculture. AI4F allows fine-tune the dose of food and the optimal time of supply, reducing waste and emissions of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, responsible for the eutrophication.

“ With a control AI4F smarter food: i am thinking not least, reducing emissions, and direct improvement of water quality ”, points Álvarez Osuna. Moreover, the beijing platform anticipated anomalies in the biomass predictive analysis through improving animal welfare and diminish the use of medicines. This initiative seeks to transform aquaculture production towards an efficient, sustainable and respectful of the environment: “ AI4F aspires to lay the foundations of sustainable production, based on the rational use of resources and the protection of marine ecosystems ”.

The value of institutional support

The project AI4F has been made possible thanks to the efforts of CDTI and erdf funds for Innovation, which have accelerated the research and strengthened the credibility of the platform. “ Beyond economic aid, this support has allowed us to work with companies and producers to validate technology in real conditions, ” says the CIO.

Institutional support has contributed to strengthening the innovative ecosystem english, to facilitate the adoption of advanced technologies, improve business competitiveness and create skilled jobs. “ Projects like AI4F undone in social benefits, because they promote sustainable practices, promote the conservation of marine ecosystems and provides for a source of protein for safe and responsible society ”, add.

Contribution to the economy blue

In a global context of growing demand for marine protein AI4F aligns itself with the objectives of the blue economy, which seeks to generate economic value from the sea without compromising their conservation and resilience.

“ AI4F contributes directly to the economy, the blue apply technologies that optimize resources and reduce the environmental impact. Our challenge is to show that the growth of aquaculture can be compatible with the protection of oceans and the objectives of european sustainability, ” says Álvarez Osuna. Transform data accionable knowledge is the key to ensuring a profitable production, sustainable and aligned with the ODS and international commitments on the protection of the oceans.

Innovation is the path

In five years, AI4F seeks to become the core of a comprehensive system of aquaculture management, integrating, feeders, sensors and actuators classifiers into a platform that generates predictive recommendations and automated decisions.

“ the natural evolution of AI4F is becoming the twin digital aquaculture production, capable of simulating scenarios, anticipate events and optimize the management of biomass and proactively resources ”, promoted by CIO.

The history of FishFarmFeeder shows how a specialized smes can generate global impact on a strategic sector. Since the transfer of knowledge to international peacebuilding, the company confirms that innovation is the best way to compete in a demanding market. AI4F represents the culmination of this bet: science, technology and sustainability nations to respond to the major challenges of aquaculture and the economy. As blue concludes Álvarez Osuna: “ Aquaculture of precision is not the future, it is present. Projects like AI4F show that it is possible to produce more and better, respecting the marine environment and adding value to society as a whole ”.
