Interview with Pedro Luis Navarro, CEO and founder of Igluco Tech: “ Co-financing with european funds and the support of CDTI Innovation have been instrumental in the development of our technology ”
The project Glucube, developed by the company Igluco Tech with support from the CDTI Innovation and co-financing of european funds ERDF, driven by a new way of understanding glycemic control: without pinching, without consumables and with a user experience connected, intuitive and without friction. The solution is opting for a non-invasive technology based NIR spectroscopy and artificial intelligence, aimed at preventing and improve the quality of life for people with prediabetes diabetes, and other metabolic conditions

Glucube, developed by the company sevillian Igluco Tech, promises to transform the way in which millions of people control their glucose, by removing one of the most persistent barriers looking after herself: the pain. Funded by the CDTI Innovation and co-financed with european funds ERDF, the system allows measuring levels of glucose without pinching, neither consumables, through a combination of spectroscopy NIR (near infrared) and artificial intelligence. This is a portable solution, non-intrusive, connected and user experience.
Glucube is a relevant case development and added value with great social impact in the area of health, driven by european policies through financial support from European Funds on Regional development, which promote ERDF, among other objectives, progress and economic growth and social council through research and technology, in pursuit of social progress. Glucube helps to improve the quality of life, thanks to the R + D + I.
Technology, a product of collaboration with the group of Biomedical Engineering, university of seville, aims to change the paradigm of glucémico control, thanks to facilitating follow-up newspaper without friction, non-invasive and with a significant reduction of supplies. “ the objective has always been developing a technology without pain, sustainable and easy to use that allowed for greater autonomy and quality of life. We knew that, if we wanted to improve the metabolic control, we had to go beyond the traditional sensors, ” explains Pedro Luis Navarro, CEO and founder of Igluco Tech.
The signal-personal data
Glucube is based on a portable device with an Optical sensor, which employs a near infrared light, which goes to the best finger. The system detects how interacts with glucose present in the agency and, using artificial intelligence, estimated the level of user glucémico accuracy comparable to the traditional systems, but without triggering the usual physical difficulties of these traditional systems.
One of the major challenges, has been adapt the model to the individual biological variability. “ Algorithms learn with each test and adapt to the person progressively. This allows us to improve performance in real time and adjust to the particular characteristics of the user ”, detailed Navarro.
Through this approach, Igluco Tech has created a device that not only measured, but that evolves over and optimum user experience thanks to the continued use of the device.

Glucube is an innovative system to measure the glucose in a non-invasive and in real time, without injections or consumables
User experience and connectivity
Designed to integrate intuitive in everyday life, Glucube connects using Bluetooth mobile application that offers a clear display of glucose levels, as well as individual history and interactive dialogue, as well as launching personalized alerts to help you maintain sugar is controlled. Another of your qualities, that lets you store the data in the cloud, and share them with health professionals or families safely.
In addition, the system includes a control interface Panel called Glucube. A website oriented to doctors, nutritionists, coaches and caregivers, which facilitates the monitoring of patients, personalized decision-making and the prevention of episodes of risk. This feature makes it a useful tool, not only for people with diabetes, but also for those with prediabetes and metabolic syndrome.
“ The metabolic control can no longer be limited to ad hoc. We must integrate technology in daily life of the patient, and that it was essential to provide comfortable solutions, reliable and aimed at prevention ”, underlines the CEO.
Children and adolescents, a core group
An important segment for Igluco Tech is children and adolescents, a group were particularly sensitive to invasive methods. The follow-up paediatric age is essential to prevent long-term complications. The company is working to adapt the system to this audience, with a great deal of attention, reflect the specific characteristics. “ once the validemos for children and adolescents, we hope to eliminate stigma and to facilitate a more comfortable and follow continuous, both at home and school environments and sports, ” says Navarro.
The challenge is not only technical, but also emotional and educational because, for children and families, a device without pricks will increase the control and adherence, systematically and reduce the anxiety linked to daily evidence.
Scientific and clinical validation
Glucube is the result of a solid track record of applied research, which began with studies in biomedical engineering at the university of seville and that has evolved towards functional system and suitable for marketing. The project is in addition, with the support of the institute of Biomechanics of Valencia (IBV), which had contributed to the ergonomic design of the device, your comfort, which is intuitive and fits the daily use by the users.
“ the system has been validated in a study with more than 100 patients, with some notable outcomes rather than, which has opened the door for the certification of a health product. Process that we are doing and we anticipate for later this year, ” explains Navarro.

Sustainability and business model
Unlike other systems Glucube does not require disposable supplies as strips, needles or stickers. This, in addition to financial savings for the user, is an environmental impact considerably lower, than traditional methods. The company is stuck on systems for collecting and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment, and employs ecological packaging with FSC certificate. "each year tonnes of waste generated health associated with the monitoring of glucose. We propose a more sustainable and committed to the circular economy, ” says Navarro.
The business model, combining direct selling online with the construction of an ecosystem of digital services. In addition to the device, the company offers, data analysis, a clinical reports algorithmic customization, customer service, and several more progress, now under investigation or development. They are also engaged in the integration of the system, in public health programmes and medical insurance. Since the company, recognize that the institutional support, has been relevant in order to advance the process of development. “ the financing of CDTI Innovation, in part co-financed with european funds ERDF, has been instrumental in the project's progress ", highlights Navarro.
Marketing, certification and expansion
Glucube already commercially available in Spain as electronic device of welfare, with more than 1,000 active users and a growing community. The company has commenced as class health product IIA under european regulation, thus allowing it to clinical use for the management of diabetes and other metabolic disorders.
“ the sanitary certification will open a new stage. You can access to hospitals, pharmacies, insurers and strengthen our value proposition in the Clinical arena, ” says Navarro. Furthermore, in parallel, five years are integrated with digital platforms of health, sports and well-being.
At the international level, the company expects to expand its presence in latin america and europe through agreements with distributors and actors of the ecosystem health. They are also exploring their entry into the us market.
“ our goal is not just sell devices, but to create a platform of metabolic health smart, accessible and user-centric. We Believe that the future of glucémico control lies in the customization, connectivity and experience without barriers. That measured glucose to become a standard act, social, and we can do whenever you wish. Glucube is our proposal for this future, and we want to pursue it as far as possible, ” concludes.
CDTI Innovation
