The CDTI Innovation delivers to the Catalan Health Institute the prototypes of the H2 HOSPITALS project within the framework of the Pre-commercial Public Purchase

  • The H2 HOSPITALS initiative of R&D services in the field of back-up systems with generation and storage based on green hydrogen and integrable in the intelligent energy management of the hospital, has had a base tender budget of 6 million euros
  • La entidad pública validadora de la solución será el Institut Català de la Salut (ICS)

Development of green hydrogen backup systems for smart hospital energy management

The CDTI Innovation continues to deploy prototype deliveries of multiple public procurement actions in the scope of initiatives co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR) and by European funds ERDF 2021-2027.

Specifically, it has just formalized the delivery to the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) of the two prototypes corresponding to the H2 HOSPITALS project, which consists of a pre-commercial public purchase of R&D services in the field of backup systems with generation and storage based on green hydrogen, which are integrable in the intelligent energy management of the hospital. In addition, this initiative is co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.

Today’s hospitals’ electrical backup systems rely on fossil fuels, resulting in CO₂ emissions. Therefore, the ICS promotes the decarbonization of its hospital network, and in this context, the Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol plans to replace its backup systems with solutions based on green hydrogen.

It should be noted that the project is led by the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) as a public entity requesting the CDTI, while, at the same time, the Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol, an integral center of the ICS network, will act as a demonstrator environment, where the integration and validation of the prototype will be carried out. In this way, the hospital will be the first ICS centre to test this innovative green hydrogen based energy supply and backup technology in real conditions.

Consequently, the project seeks to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as an integrated backup and energy system, also taking advantage of by-products such as oxygen and residual heat to maximize efficiency and sustainability. The solution should also incorporate advanced hydrogen technologies and be intelligently managed alongside the hospital’s energy systems.

The innovative solution should achieve the goal of successfully addressing all phases in which clinical research can benefit from new technologies. On the other hand, it should be noted that the base budget of this tender has been 6 million euros and, after validation, the project will have been developed within a full implementation period of 24 months.

Since 2018, the CDTI Innovation promotes public procurement in the Pre-commercial (CPP) modality. Through this instrument, the CDTI Innovation acquires R&D services to develop prototypes of first products or services, in the form of test series, technologically innovative and that meet public needs. Likewise, the prototype developed within the framework of these CPPs is assigned to the Spanish public entity that is interested in it and can provide the real environment necessary to validate the technology developed. Finally, the prototype should be used exclusively as a technological demonstrator, to validate technology, without subsequent commercial purposes. In general, these initiatives are co-financed mainly with European funds.
