International technological cooperation boosts new R&D opportunities for Spanish companies

The National Research Center, the most important research entity in Egypt, is looking for a Spanish company to carry out an R&D project aimed at the development of intelligent food packaging solutions. La Dra. Hebat-Allah S. Tohamy, of the Institute of Chemical Industries and responsible for research, states that conventional food packaging and quality control methods lack real-time, non-destructive and easy-to-use indicators that allow accurate monitoring of food deterioration or environmental changes prior to consumption or industrial processing.

To alleviate this problem, the Egyptian researcher proposes:

  • Develop advanced functional nanomaterials and biopolymer matrices that incorporate optical colour change sensors, such as carbon points obtained from agricultural waste
  • Transform chemical and environmental variations (such as pH changes, volatile decomposition gases or specific analytes) into visual, clear and reliable color transitions, capable of visual interpretation
  • Scaling the production of sensor formulations to achieve their integration into commercial packaging formats or industrial detection devices

This proposal aims to be presented to the 2026 call of the ESIP program "Egypt Spain Innovation Programme", within the framework of the Spanish-Egyptian Bilateral Technological Cooperation Program, which will remain open until December 3, 2026.
