CDTI Innovation’s SICC Innvierte invests in bound4blue, a leading company in wind propulsion systems that accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime sector

The CDTI Innovation, through its initiative Innvierte has invested in bound4blue, a Spanish company with global projection that develops automated wind-assisted propulsion systems as an integral solution for shipowners and shipowners seeking to reduce fuel consumption and polluting emissions.

Bound4blue, a company considered strategic by CDTI Innovation and for which it has committed an investment of more than 17 million euros in a new round of financing of 44 million dollars that the company has just closed, will facilitate the progress towards the complete industrialization of this technological solution that is being consolidated as the immediate, scalable and profitable way to decarbonize the world fleet, with direct economic benefits for shipowners.

bound4blue’s technological solution, eSAIL® system is suitable for tankers, bulk carriers, ro-ros, cruises, ferries, gas carriers and general cargo ships, regardless of size or age. Operational data continues to demonstrate the significant impact that these wind propulsion systems are having on different fleets. The company has installed its technology on seven ships and has another twelve in its portfolio, which adds more than fifty candles in total.

By 2027, the company plans to generate annual savings of more than 400,000 tons of CO₂, with more than 570,000 tons avoided between 2024 and 2027. This is equivalent to removing about 87,000 cars from circulation each year, planting more than 18 million trees or avoiding more than 250,000 transatlantic flights. These results will be possible thanks to its parallel production lines in Spain and China, which will increase the pace of manufacturing, strengthen the resilience of the supply chain and shorten delivery times.

With this investment, the CDTI Innovation reaffirms its commitment to promote sustainable renewable energy initiatives applied to the maritime field.

Innvierte

Innvierte is an initiative whose objective is to promote business innovation by supporting venture capital investment in technology-based or innovative companies. This program is implemented through the closed-ended collective investment company Innvierte Economía Permanente SICC S.M.E., S.A., self-managed and subject to the supervision of the National Securities Market Commission and of which CDTI Innovation is a single shareholder.

To date, the CDTI Innovation has committed, through Innvierte, 2,885.8 M€ in 54 investment vehicles and, through its co-investment line, has directly committed an amount of 829.4 M€ in 197 companies.

Innvierte is part of the Spanish Strategy of Science, Technology and Innovation 2021-2027, approved by Agreement of the Council of Ministers, in September 2020. This Strategy contains the objectives, reforms and measures that must be adopted throughout the field of R+D+I in order to boost its growth and impact and is one of the pillars on which the design of the Government's R+D+I policy for the coming years is based.
