Spain reinforces its position in international technology superconductors magnets with new laboratory SMART-Lab
The minister of science, innovation and universities, Diana Morant, has been inaugurated today at the seat of the laboratory of CIEMAT magnets SMART-Lab High Field, a scientific that positioned spain as a key player in the development of advanced technologies in the area of particle physics and engineering of magnets superconductive

The inaugural ceremony attended by Teresa Risk, secretary-general of innovation and chairperson of the CDTI Innovation, Eva Ortega, secretary-general for research, Yolanda Benito, director-general and CIEMAT José Moisés Martín Checker, director general of the CDTI innovation plus other personalities CERN and national and international representatives of the scientific and technological community.
This laboratory is one of the objectives envisaged by the programme of Magnets superconductors Very High Field (PRISMAC), which was formed in 2019 after a collaboration agreement between the CDTI Innovation and CIEMAT whose financing participate CERN and the ministry of science, innovation and universities, through the secretariat-General of research.
This installation is a great strategic opportunity for the spanish industry, especially in high-tech sectors requiring complex components, systems cryogens, advanced materials and electronics of precision, among others.
Its infrastructure will be the basis for the development of prototypes of magnets with which spain will contribute to the forthcoming colisionadores family particle physics and serve as a reference and support for spanish companies with interests in the development of magnetic components have the necessary instrumentation for the prototype of its products, thus fostering industrial capacity.
In addition, in this laboratory they can be carried out programmes acceleration systems for societal applications as advanced radiotherapy or coils for new fusion reactors. In the field of medicine, these technologies will also allow for significant progress in the treatment of different types of cancer and improve diagnostic systems by image, among other applications.
Programme PRISMAC: Strategic opportunity for the spanish industry
The programme PRISMAC intends to develop during the coming years, large magnets superconductors very high field, offering the industrial sector english the opportunity to acquire experience in a highly innovative technology. This will enable the spanish companies for future tenders at CERN and other international scientific facilities and to position the spanish industry competitive as a reference to the international level.
Public investment amounts to eur 24 million, of which the CDTI Innovation brings more than 8 million.
This programme includes, in addition, the construction of a small magnets serialized multi-capas dipolos high technology Field for the project High Histogram LHC accelerator and development of some prototypes of magnets of very high area of new generation for Future Circular Collider (FCC). It also deals with the development of technologies HTS (High-temperature superconductors) for imams superconductive both for particle physics and merger.
Spanish position
The CDTI Industrial innovation, as a Liaison Officer in the major International Science Facilities (GICs) it participates in Spain, is responsible for managing the industrial and technological returns derived from their tenders.
Its work focused on identifying opportunities to improve the technological training spanish companies, with the aim of maximizing the return industrial and guide their involvement to areas of high strategic interest of the country.
Spain is, after Germany, france, united kingdom and italy, the fifth largest contributor to CERN, european organization for nuclear research. According To the CDTI Innovation in the past year Spain has obtained a industrial returns exceeds 100 per cent and has obtained contracts of high technological value in high-precision mechanics, radiofrequency solid state, electronic safety systems, etc.
CDTI Innovation
The centre for technological development and innovation, CDTI E.P.E. is a public company under the ministry of Science, innovation and universities, whose goal is the promotion of technological innovation in business. The CDTI mission is to ensure that the business fabric english generates and transform knowledge into growth científico-técnico globally competitive, sustainable and inclusive. By 2024, within the framework of a new strategic plan, the CDTI provided more than $2.3 billion euros of support for business startups and spain.
