Interview with Alan Fuste Ordered, CEO and cofounder of Mathew: “ Moved by the CDTI and Innovation funds MRR, we have developed which will be key AI in the education sector ”

The failure and drop-out rates remain two major challenges of the educational system in Spain. Factors such as the demotivation, lack of participation or unequal opportunities hinder many students achieve successfully complete their education. In this scenario, technology, and especially the artificial intelligence, is emerging as a strategic tool not only to anticipate risks, but also to transform the way in the guide and supports students along the way.

With the aim of creating a solution based on artificial intelligence to customize the learning and predict the evolution of the student, Alan Fuste Ordered, computer engineer and communications systems, together with Xavier Velasco, decide to constitute Mathew in 2020.

Currently, Fuste Ordered is CEO of the company and has a strong record in the development of technologies of artificial intelligence and machine learning experience. Its strategic vision and have been key to position Mathew as reference in the use of educational IA: “ Our mission is to contribute to a more personalized education, equitable and effective technology, putting the service of all persons involved in the educational process, such as teachers, students, managements and families. In Addition, we focus on a comprehensive vision of learning, where the needs of each student will be taken into account. That is why we develop innovative solutions that accompanied and enhance the process of enseñanza-aprendizaje, adapting to the rhythms, contexts and individual capacities of each person ”, says.

Towards a personalized education

For decades, it is known that each student learns differently and that receive personalized attention can make a big difference in performance and well-being. However, have a teacher for every pupil is neither feasible nor economically or logistically.

As noted: “ if Fuste Ordered each student a teaching only devoted exclusively to their learning, could attain a higher performance and best learning experience. However, this reality is unfeasible from the economic point of view and number of teachers, in addition to which would limit the social development and integrated approach to the student. Accumulating knowledge is not everything.

To this challenge, technologies, such as the artificial intelligence offer new opportunities. Thanks to the artificial intelligence, the same group of 30 students can share classroom, but each move at its own pace, besides receiving attention suited to their needs. In this way, technology is helping to overcome the barriers to traditional education and promotes a more personalized learning and effective. Always, of course, understanding IA as a teacher, ” she adds.

Mathew: platform of artificial intelligence for a more personalized education

With this vision 2022, started to develop the first features aimed at supporting the student, laying the foundations for what is now part of Mathew, an educational platform based on artificial intelligence educational and safe. Its aim is to accompany the students throughout his academic career, helping to predict its performance, detect risks of neglect, emotional support and facilitate decision-making within schools.

This ambitious project, supported by the CDTI Neotec of Innovation and funded by the mechanism for the recovery and resilience, wants to change the traditional approach of the academic mentoring.

“ this project is much more than a technology platform; is a tool designed to transform the way we understand and support the course of education of students. Our approach part of a simple idea: before applying technology, we wonder how it would resolve the problem without it. As there is no single solution, we combine various technologies, each with their strengths, to address the educational problem comprehensively and effectively, ” explains the CEO.

The platform, use advanced techniques such as graphs, IA and analysis to interpret complex relations between different factors — such as the notes, the context of staff or emotional state of the student. Thus, it is able to generate useful knowledge to improve their academic experience.

“ we want to help the university students, particularly in the first stage, to improve its performance and satisfaction, and at the same time reduce the risk of abandonment. Educational centres, this project is also an opportunity to optimize resources and make more informed decisions and efficient, ” explains Fuste Ordered.

Mathew: designed to offer personalised support predictive and academic performance through artificial intelligence

IA at the service of the academic performance

Mathew, also uses artificial intelligence to anticipate the academic performance as the risk of dropout of students. It is based on the study of thousands of prior trajectories, allowing the system to identify patterns and conclusions to be relevant.

“ Simplified, and we do is to analyse historical data of thousands of students with various academic trajectories. From there, the system learns what factors had influenced their performance. Later, when we incorporate the data of new students, compared with previous patterns for find similarities and how it will be able to predict its future performance or if there is risk of dropping-out. And, although this is just one part of the system, is an essential piece of predictive approach promoted by Mathew, ” says the co-founder.

Screening of the company

With a clear vocation for educational innovation, Mathew continues to believe in the development of safe and artificial intelligence.

“ thanks to the CDTI Innovation we have successfully completed a phase of research in this project, which otherwise would not have been possible. For now, our goal is to continue researching and innovating to further progress in the customization of education, adapting it to the needs of each student. This project is just the start. We want the educational technology no longer just a promise to become a real tool for each student in their way, ” concludes Fuste Ordered.
