Towards a more inclusive technological innovation and leadership

The CDTI Innovation strengthens its commitment to inclusive innovation in the area of technology with programmes that promote women's participation in key sectors such as icts, biotechnology or artificial intelligence

In the twenty-first century, the information and communication technologies (ICT) have become a fundamental pillar for the economic, social and environmental development. Its ability to connect people, optimize services and facilitate access to information the positioned as key tools in the fight against inequality, poverty and exclusion. In this context, the goals of Sustainable Development (ODS) of the Agenda 2030 recognize its indispensable role as catalysts of change. However, the digital processing will only be truly inclusive and sustainable development by addressing the structural inequalities, as the gender gap in the technology sector. Sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity or software development continue to experience a low female participation, which stresses the need for active public policies to ensure equal opportunities for girls and women in the digital economy.

In this context, the CDTI innovation, through its programmes in support of I + D + i, promotes a more inclusive technological ecosystem by promoting the participation of women at all levels of the innovative process.

In the framework of the international day of girls in ict, CDTI underlines its commitment to a digital transformation inclusive, reflected in both its strategic Plan for the period 2024-2027 and in its portfolio of financing instruments. Programs like NEOTEC or INNVIERTE have introduced specific measures to boost technological entrepreneurship led by women. In particular, the line “ Neotec Women Entrepreneurs ” has shown a high demand, with more than eur 11 million in the last two years in the initiatives undertaken by women in sectors such as health, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity or sustainable mobility.

From 2018, female participation in projects funded from the CDTI has grown steadily, from 22 per cent in 2018 to 30 per cent in 2024. This progress is even more significant in highly skilled profiles: 39.3 per cent of participants with doctorates. In addition, women's leadership in projects has also increased, reaching to 23.8 per cent in the past year. These figures reflect a positive trend, although there is still room for improvement in order to achieve true parity in the area of technological innovation.
