Antonio Martínez Borrajo, CEO of BOMAQ Industries: "With the support of CDTI Innovation and FEDER funds, we have developed an electric truck to be used on uneven terrain without sacrificing power and robustness"
Electrifying machinery that works on rough surfaces and in demanding conditions poses problems related to autonomy, traction and resistance, especially in off-road forklifts. BOMAQ Industries has decided to address this challenge with the B25 EH, a fully electric four-wheel drive (4WD) model that seeks to maintain the performance of its combustion machines and expand the possibilities of use in environments where emissions and noise are a relevant factor. This development is supported by the CDTI Innovation and the European funds FEDER
The Murcian company BOMAQ Industries was born in 2013 with a very specific industrial vocation, focused on manufacturing robust off-road forklifts, easy to maintain and prepared for demanding professional applications. Since its first models, the company has opted to develop its own engineering and combine it with solutions from specialized suppliers, a strategy that has allowed it to progressively expand its offer and consolidate its catalog in the segment of 4WD machines.
This tour has also led the company to expand its international presence, with customers and distributors in Europe and North America and applications in sectors such as construction, agriculture, industry and defense. “From the beginning, we have opted for our own engineering and the use of components from leading brands, which has allowed us to evolve from a smaller range to a family of 4WD machines with different capacities and configurations,” explains Antonio Martínez Borrajo, CEO of BOMAQ.
The evolution of the company in this area led him to consider the next step. Electric propulsion is already widespread in industrial trucks, but its implementation progresses more slowly in off-road applications, where working conditions require higher levels of traction, resistance and autonomy. This gap opened an opportunity for BOMAQ to develop an alternative adapted to these scenarios.
Adapting the machine for irregular terrain
The challenge was to move the electrification to a machine that must overcome slopes, work on low adhesion surfaces and withstand vibrations, dust and continuous stresses. BOMAQ thus proposed a specific development for the off-road, instead of simply adapting an electric industrial trolley.
To achieve this, the B25 EH uses an electric motor that drives a hydrostatic transmission, responsible for transforming that power into motion and carrying it to the axles. This architecture allows to preserve the behavior and control that the company seeks in its machines, while incorporating a new energy management and a battery adapted to the demands of the whole.
The B25 EH uses an electric propulsion engine and off-road wheels
"The main challenge has been to electrify the machine without simply turning it into an electric industrial truck with off-road wheels," says Antonio Martínez. In this way, the developed solution takes advantage of the experience accumulated by the company in traction systems and adapts it to a completely electric propulsion.
Fewer emissions to work in more spaces
Compared to a conventional combustion truck, the B25 EH extends the possibilities of use in certain indoor, outdoor or semi-enclosed environments, where air quality conditions and noise pollution can be particularly relevant. "The most obvious advantage is the absence of local exhaust emissions during operation, along with a very significant reduction in noise," says the head of BOMAQ.
Electric propulsion also simplifies some of the maintenance associated with the thermal engine, as elements such as engine oil, some of the filters, and fuel and exhaust gas treatment systems disappear. Furthermore, the increased efficiency of this equipment makes it possible to reduce the operating costs of the machine during its life cycle, depending on the use made of it.
In addition, this model has been designed to combine the handling of loads with the movement between different work areas, which expands its possibilities for implementation in sectors such as agriculture, construction, agro-industrial farms or certain food industries and industrial and logistical facilities. “The B25 EH is designed precisely for applications where it is necessary to combine off-road mobility and load handling with the advantages of an electric machine,” says Martínez Borrajo.
A manufacturing supported in the industrial environment of Murcia
The development of a new machine also depends on the ability to quickly switch from design to prototype and test it on the ground. In the case of Murcia, the proximity of specialized companies in the sector facilitates that process. "There is an industrial fabric with experience in metal transformation, machining, welding, hydraulics, electricity and machinery manufacturing, and that proximity greatly facilitates the development of new products," explains the CEO.
The new model offers robustness and autonomy without local emissions or noise
This proximity makes it possible to introduce changes, manufacture prototypes and test solutions together with the engineering team, something especially useful in a small company that works with mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems. That ability to adapt the product and respond quickly also underpins its international expansion, based on specialization, in-house engineering and productive flexibility.
The impulse of the CDTI Innovation
The B25 EH represents for BOMAQ a development of greater complexity than a conventional product evolution, combining a new propulsion architecture with changes in manufacturing and validation. "The support of CDTI Innovation has been important because such a development requires dedicating engineering, manufacturing and validation resources to a technology that involves superior technical and economic risks," explains Antonio Martínez.
For the CEO, this support has also allowed “to face the project with greater capacity, accelerate certain phases of development and deepen in solutions that would otherwise be more difficult for a company of our size to assume.” In addition, the project is integrated into its global innovation strategy and into the transition to a new generation of machinery with lower emissions.
From Prototype to Serial Manufacturing
The B25 EH truck has already entered the prototype and validation phase, in which BOMAQ is putting the machine to the test in working conditions to adjust its definitive configuration. The tests allow us to check aspects such as performance, autonomy, reliability and robustness, and detect the necessary changes before moving on to mass production.
The next steps are to incorporate the improvements derived from these tests and prepare for industrialization. The aim is to have a fully validated version that maintains the work requirements that BOMAQ applies to the rest of its range.
However, for Antonio Martínez, electrification will not immediately replace combustion machines. In the off-road segment, the choice will continue to depend on various factors such as power, weather or the availability of charging points, which make each application require a specific solution.
Therefore, the CEO foresees a gradual transition, with different solutions coexisting over the next few years. "At BOMAQ we see a future in which different technologies will coexist for years, but where electrical machinery will gain ground especially in medium capacities and in applications with well-defined work cycles," he concludes.
