The CDTI Innovation earmarked eur 12 million for the development of systems for aerial fire

Comienza la Fase I de la Compra Pública Precomercial de servicios I+D de la iniciativa INCENDIOS

Incendios FASE 1
The CDTI Innovation promotes the development of a demonstrator/prototype of an autonomous air system

Forest fires have increased significantly due to the effects of climate change. In 2022 were consumed by fire in Spain over 250,000 hectares, the triple that of the previous year, while it is true that there was only a very small increase in the number of fires, these figures as worrying were due to these were much more serious still, the number of large fires (burning of over 500 hectares) triple last year.

The increase of the area burnt was not due to both the number of incidents, as the complexity and virulence. An explanation of this phenomenon is due to the effects of climate change: long periods of absence of rain with high temperatures in summer months prior to and during this.

The fact that the fires escalating implies that the means used to their extinction and control must evolve at the same level as those with the goal of reducing its harmful effects on the environment.

Within the means involved in fighting fires highlights the increasing use of aerial platforms due to increased capacity in areas of difficult access, as well as their use in monitoring and management of the theatre. There is also a greater presence of so-called autonomous systems We Offer, drones, RPAs … These systems have been spreading both for civilian applications such as defence and security, having been its development especially relevant in recent decades.

Technological progress

Progress in technology uavs had made it possible to begin to use in the tasks of prevention, monitoring and control, providing clear advantages with regard to the use of manned aircraft in terms of cost, operability, risk reduction, etc., although much technological development to address in terms of their involvement in such activities as a means of support in the consolidated against fires.

With regard to extinguish fires through water discharges, there is no evidence that there are still based commercial solutions drones or unmanned means that can compete with the current high-capacity aircraft. This is because, first and foremost, they are means of a larger, take-off weight, which implies the need for a certificate of airworthiness complete to operating reducing their ability to implementation as a commercial solution to the long term.

What is needed, therefore, research and development efforts to propose solutions for the inclusion of autonomous aircraft in the fight against forest fires, helping to remove the barriers of access to both technological and industrial trade, in the near future, and provide Optimal solutions and for intensive fight against the severe forest fires. This perrmitiría greater control of the same and, at the same time, it would be a lower risk to the pilots and also a lower cost.

These autonomous air system to extinguish fires

In this regard,CDTI Innovationpromotes the development of a demonstrator/prototype of a multi-role autonomous air for automation of fire fighting with the aim of testing in an environment pre-operacional new technological solutions to increase capacity-building and efficiency in the fight against forest fires.

The system developed will open future course of study of automation of firefighting, as well as other related to the performance of the system that would enable them to optimize their potential.

Public purchase innovation

The Purchase of Innovation (ICC) is a tool to promote innovation from the public sector, through the acquisition of innovative solutions and solutions in the process of development.

In 2018 integrates the icc in the activity of theCDTI Innovationand in 2023 becomes entrenched in the form of Pre-Commercial Public Purchase (CPP). Under this instrument, the CDTI services Innovation acquires R & D to develop prototypes of first products or services, in the form of test series technologically innovative, and that would meet public needs. The prototype developed within the framework of these Cpc caving in to spanish Public Entity that is interested in the same and to provide the necessary environment for real validate the technology developed. The prototype will be used only as a technology demonstrator, in order to validate technology, not for commercial purposes. These initiatives are co-financed mainly from european funds.

The CDTI Innovation develops a prospective constant technology needs assessments that may have public Sector entities english to create a map of demand.
