Patricia Tamarit, Director of Product Innovation at Nunsys: "We protect connected healthcare so that technology never puts patient care at risk, with the support of CDTI Innovation"
Digital transformation is revolutionizing healthcare, but it also poses new challenges in cybersecurity. With the support of CDTI Innovation through its INNOGLOBAL support line, Nunsys has developed HEALTH5G, a European project that has given rise to SIRENA, a platform capable of protecting hospitals and eHealth services through intelligent risk analysis, continuous monitoring and early threat detection.
The digital transformation of hospitals is changing the way they care for patients. The integration of connected medical devices, telemedicine services and systems that share clinical information in real time allows better coordination between professionals and offer more efficient and personalized care. However, this growing connectivity has also increased exposure to cyberattacks, making cybersecurity a priority for the healthcare sector.
Responding to this challenge is part of the evolution of Nunsys, a company born in Valencia in 2007 that, after significant growth, has consolidated itself as one of the main Spanish technology groups. Today, integrated into the Nunsys Group, the company, which has more than 2,500 professionals in Spain and Portugal, offers communications, systems, software and cybersecurity solutions for companies and public administrations. This comprehensive vision, based on a 360º technological model combined with a continuous commitment to innovation, has allowed the company to evolve towards security models capable of analyzing risk in real time and anticipating increasingly complex threats.
Cybersecurity reaches the heart of the hospital
In the case of the HEALTH5G project, the growing connectivity of health centers was the germ of this initiative, giving rise to an international consortium in which Nunsys led the area of security and privacy with the support of CDTI Innovation. Its aim was to protect new health services based on 5G networks, such as telemedicine, remote patient monitoring or connected medical devices, without interfering with the daily functioning of hospitals.

The problem we wanted to address is obvious: the more teams remain connected to a hospital network, the greater the number of possible entry points for a cyberattack. The objective is to guarantee the security of this infrastructure without compromising the continuity of care or hindering the work of health professionals. “As the hospital fills with connected devices, the doors through which a cyberattack can enter grow, and this project sought to close them without hindering assistance,” explains Patricia Tamarit.
A platform that turns data into decisions
The main result of the project has been SIRENA, “a safety and risk governance platform, designed to offer a global vision of the safety status of a hospital”. Its innovation lies in gathering information that usually remains scattered: the behavior of connected devices, risk analysis, regulatory obligations and information coming from monitoring systems.
In this way, the platform automatically identifies the connected assets, learns what the normal operation of the network is and detects anomalous behaviors before they can become an incident. In addition, it translates all this technical information into recommendations adapted to each professional profile, facilitating decision-making for both cybersecurity managers and management teams.
From research to hospitals
Beyond technological development, one of the main achievements of the project has been to validate this solution in real conditions. SIRENA was implemented in four hospitals in the Valencian Community thanks to the collaboration with the Ministry of Health and also led to the development of reusable recommendation guides for any other eHealth environment.
During these tests, the platform was able to identify devices that did not appear in the inventories, detect equipment that required a higher level of isolation and locate anomalous behaviors before they resulted in security incidents. All of this helps to protect clinical information and ensure that assistance can continue to be provided without interruption. “The impact is direct on the patient’s safety and privacy: the hospital becomes aware of everything connected to its network, identifies equipment that should be isolated and detects anomalous behavior before it becomes an incident,” he says.
The technology developed at HEALTH5G also contributes to moving towards safer and more resilient healthcare, aligning with objectives such as health and well-being (SDG 3), industrial innovation (SDG 9) and the development of stronger and safer institutions (SDG 16).
The support of the CDTI Innovation
The development of such a technology requires long periods of research and validation before it reaches the market. In this context, the support of CDTI Innovation has allowed Nunsys to tackle a high-technology risk project, collaborate with European partners and validate its own solution in one of the most demanding environments from the point of view of cybersecurity. “The support of the CDTI has been decisive. It has allowed us to tackle a long-distance and high-risk R&D line that we would hardly have assumed alone,” says the head of the area.

HEALTH5G has been developed within the framework of INNOGLOBAL, a support line of the CDTI Innovation that promotes international technological cooperation by supporting projects carried out with partners from other countries.
Patricia Tamarit stresses that the project has allowed them to "mature their own technology from its design to its validation in an environment as demanding as the hospital". This experience has also meant a strategic change for the company, with which it has consolidated a new line of specialization: "This support has acted as a lever: it has been the germ of new R+D+I projects and the current line of business in health cybersecurity."
From the hospital to critical infrastructures
After demonstrating its potential in the hospital environment, Nunsys is already working on the arrival on the market of this technology. It does so together with Cipherbit and with the support of INCIBE, through a specialized Security Operations Center (SOC) that integrates the intelligence of SIRENA to protect hospitals and critical infrastructures. “Our main line of work is to turn this platform into an intelligence layer that connects asset management with daily operations, relating all events to their impact on the business and consolidating a dynamic risk analysis,” explains Patricia Tamarit.
The objective is to extend this model to other hospitals and, subsequently, to critical sectors where the convergence between information technologies, industrial infrastructures and connected devices requires new protection models based on intelligence, automation and continuous risk analysis. “It’s actually the same obsession that gave rise to SIRENA taken a step further: unifying operations, empowering management and simplifying compliance in a single layer of intelligence,” he concludes.
