The CDTI Innovation seeks a Spanish company to collaborate with Egypt in the processing and valorisation of the welded fly
This initiative seeks to develop new applications from products derived from the black welded fly, such as proteins, fats, chitin, chitosan and oils, obtained through the recovery of organic waste.
The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Zagazig and the company EGYMAG Biotechnology, both from Egypt, are looking for a Spanish company to collaborate in an R&D project in the field of processing and valorisation of the black welded fly (BSFL).
EGYMAG Biotechnology has developed an insect-based platform to valorise organic waste into insect protein, fats, fertilizers, chitin, chitosan and oils. The Egyptian consortium has capabilities in the breeding and optimization of black welded fly, the characterization and transformation of waste and biomass, as well as in the extraction and exploitation of lipids, chitin and chitosan.
The competencies of the Egyptian consortium include:
- Optimization of the mass breeding of the black welded fly (BSF) and the formulation of organic substrates.
- Chemical characterization and transformation through biological processes of residues.
- Characterization of the biomass of the black welded fly, including proteins, lipids and residues.
- Extraction of lipids from the insect for possible applications in renewable energies.
- Extraction and characterization of chitin and chitosan.
- Evaluation of possible agricultural applications from the biological and chemical point of view.
- Laboratory evaluation of microbial transformation processes of co-products derived from insects for possible use as raw materials in bio-based materials.
- Call for technological cooperation with Egypt
Within the framework of the International Technological Cooperation, Spanish companies interested in the processing and use of black welded fly are sought for applications in human and animal feed, bioenergy, chitin and chitosan, biopolymers and bioplastics, melanin-based materials, as well as in agricultural applications and other products of biological origin.
This proposal aims to be presented to the 2026 call of the ESIP program "Egypt Spain Innovation Programme", within the framework of the Spanish-Egyptian Bilateral Technological Cooperation Program, which will remain open until December 3, 2026.
