3ª Comisión Mixta Extremadura
Innovation Ecosystems, FEDER Innterconnect STEP and Innovative Public Procurement stand out among the initiatives analyzed during the meeting

Business innovation is one of the main vectors for improving competitiveness and promoting the economic transformation of territories. To this end, the CDTI Innovation and the Junta de Extremadura maintain an ongoing collaboration aimed at bringing R&D&I support instruments closer to Extremadura’s business fabric and strengthening its access to national and international funding opportunities.

As a result of this collaboration, both entities signed in 2024 a new agreement for the promotion of innovation and technological development in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. In accordance with the agreement, which stipulates annual follow-up meetings, both institutions have held in Badajoz the 3rd meeting of the Joint Follow-up Commission to evaluate the progress achieved and coordinate new joint actions. The meeting has allowed to analyze the evolution of the actions developed during the last year and identify new lines of work to continue strengthening the innovation capacities of the entities of Extremadura.

At the national level, the growing interest of companies in the region in the instruments managed by the CDTI Innovation has been demonstrated. Aid for Research and Development projects, initiatives aimed at technology-based companies, such as NEOTEC aid, and support programmes for innovative business projects continue to be consolidated as key tools to boost technological development and the competitiveness of the productive fabric of Extremadura. This trend is also reflected in the high volume of proposals currently under evaluation presented by entities of the autonomous community, which demonstrates the dynamism of the regional innovation ecosystem and its increasing use of public instruments to support R+D+I.

Among the most dynamic actions, the calls for Innovation and Transfer Ecosystems and FEDER Innterconnect STEP stand out. The first has aroused considerable interest among regional innovation agents, while the second is helping to promote business R&D projects in strategic areas for competitiveness and technological transformation. Both initiatives strengthen the collaboration between companies, knowledge centers and other actors of the innovative ecosystem of Extremadura, favoring the development of projects with high potential of economic and technological impact.

The Commission has also analysed the actions related to Innovative Public Procurement promoted by the CDTI Innovation in Extremadura. Among them stands out the Pre-Commercial Public Procurement initiative for the development of advanced organ preservation technologies, developed in collaboration with the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, as well as new actions oriented to the field of robotic surgery, which reinforce the positioning of the region in health technologies of high added value.

At international level, the Commission has reviewed the evolution of Extremadura's participation in Horizon Europe. The results reflect a very significant advance compared to the previous European Union Framework Programme: the entities of Extremadura have managed to attract 30.7 million euros in Horizon Europe, compared to the 12.5 million obtained during the entire period of Horizon 2020, consolidating a trajectory of sustained growth and a greater presence in international R+D+i consortia.

Likewise, the participation of entities from Extremadura in other international initiatives of business technology cooperation has been highlighted, which allow to establish strategic alliances with partners from other countries and facilitate the incorporation of knowledge, capacities and new business opportunities to the regional ecosystem of innovation.

The holding of this Joint Committee highlights the importance of institutional collaboration to maximise the impact of policies supporting innovation. The joint work between CDTI Innovation and the Junta de Extremadura will continue to promote the participation of companies, technology centers and research agencies in high added value projects that contribute to strengthening the innovative capacity and international projection of the region, generating new opportunities for economic growth based on knowledge and technology.
