The CDTI Innovation mobilizes resources in business R&D for women's health within the framework of the 'Somos' program. We count'
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, today presented the program 'Somos' at the Ortega–Marañón Foundation. We count: an end to discrimination against women in health research', promoted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) with the aim of tripling public investment in R&D projects focused on women's health to 18 million euros
The CDTI Innovation acts as a central instrument in the transfer of that commitment to the business fabric, with two lines of aid that channel funding towards R&D projects in which women's health is a priority vector.
The first is the call for Science and Innovation Missions 2026, with an initial allocation of 60 million euros. Of that budget, at least 5 million euros are explicitly reserved for the mission "Women's health in the framework of bio-health research aimed at pathologies with greater impact on women". Pathologies at the focus of this mission include endometriosis, autoimmune and thyroid diseases, chronic pain, specific cardiovascular health, mental health, and conditions linked to menopause and hormonal health.
The second contribution of the CDTI comes through the Innterconnect-STEP programme, which is endowed with 90 million euros co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is aimed at R&D projects in cooperation with a territorial approach, particularly in less developed regions. Among its strategic priority sectors is "Health, demographic change and welfare", which makes it a complementary channel of financing for business projects that address bio-health challenges, including those linked to women's health, from a logic of regional cohesion.
Both instruments respond to the framework of the Strategic Plan of the CDTI 2024-2027, which places the orientation of business R&D towards priority social challenges as one of its structural axes. With this contribution, the CDTI contributes to the 'Somos' program. We count' the link that goes from basic research to innovation with applied impact: that of Spanish companies with the capacity to develop technological solutions against a structural inequality that has conditioned for decades scientific attention to pathologies that affect thousands of women.
