Elena García, president and founder of Marsi Bionics: “ the CDTI Innovation has fuelled the development of a personal technology that improves the quality of life of children with disorders of the motion ”

Marsi Bionics, a pioneer in the development of robotic devices for the rehabilitation and assistance of the march, has developed, with the support of CDTI innovation, the first paediatric exoesqueleto personal use, designed specifically to attend the progress of children with disorders of neuro-development clinic in their daily lives

This project, driven by the CDTI innovation, has been developed by Marsi Bionics, CSIC and four Madrid university hospitals

Marsi Bionics was formed in 2013 as spin-off Automatic centre and robotics (CAR), a joint entity of the Universidad politécnica de Madrid and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones científicas (CSIC), with the goal of developing and transferred to the first exoesqueleto society of paediatric world. The company was founded by Elena García, an industrial engineer by Universidad politécnica de Madrid and robotics Doctorate in engineering for the very centre of knowledge. It explains that the origin of the company goes back to the case of Daniela, a girl who, after a traffic accident, lost the ability to walk. “ We needed to find a solution so that children as Daniela, difficulties in the pattern of the progress that had the opportunity to walk. We Note that there was an incipient exoesqueletos technology for adults and decided to look for the development of paediatric exoesqueletos because so far, there is no technology aimed at children. ” Today, that provide solutions through technological innovation has become a reality.

Exoesqueleto EXPLORER: technology with social impact

Marsi Bionics had already developed in collaboration with the CSIC, the first exoesqueleto paediatric world, the ATLAS 2030. “ the use of this first exoesqueleto clinical is exclusively and thanks to its proven medical evidence, we have been able to endorse its effectiveness. This has enabled us to take the next step: develop the first paediatric exoesqueleto personal use, equipped with four engines to replicate the natural movement of the muscles and adapted to the daily lives of children with disorders ”, ensures ongoing García Navy.

Exoesqueleto EXPLORER

The exoesqueleto, called EXPLORER, enables children to walk for everyday environments, giving them greater independence. “ For us it is essential to highlight the impact of the device in the mobility and neuro-development clinic infant mortality as that, in addition to enable them to walk, muscle favour their development and motor and enhances their stability and confidence to walk. In Addition, a key aspect of EXPLORER is its inclusive character, independence and participation because this system facilitates the integration of the smallest in activities of daily life, how to play in the park, go to school, getting around town or be an active part of family, ” explains García Navy.

In this evolution, one of the major achievements of this prototype has been able to adapt to the growth of paediatric patients. “ If something characterises this exoesqueleto is that that will evolve: adjusts from two to seventeen years, considering key aspects such as the comfort and tolerance. In addition, we have raised an important innovation: a collapsible adjustable compartments which transforms the automatic device in a wheelchair integrated rest, improving comfort and the continued use of the child in their day-to-day ”.

Innovation and future

This project in the joint invitation ISCIII-CDTI 2022, laid down in the LOSS of health and financed by the mechanism for the recovery and resilience, began in 2023 with the aim of transforming the lives of these children.

“ to develop a technology with social impact and ensure that the gains transformers graduating, it is essential to public funding of agencies such as the CDTI Innovation. Their support lets you convert projects like this in a tangible reality that impact on the well-being of many children and their families, as well as encouraging the growth of the health sector, ” says García, president of Marsi Bionics.

In this line, this support not only fosters innovation, but reflects a strategic vision of technology as an engine of social transformation and improvement of collective well-being. Bet by initiatives such as EXPLORER is a bet of a more equitable society and, where cohesive investment in r + D + i generates a direct return in terms of achievement, health and quality of life and citizenship.

With this vision, the following objective for EXPLORER is obtaining certification for its commercialization in europe. “ Once, our aim is to bring this technology to all families in need, within and outside spain. We Will Continue To improve the device and consolidate our presence in the european market, where we are already known by ATLAS 2030. In Addition, we are able to expand to other international markets, ” concludes. “ democratize this technology is a long-term challenge, but in Marsi Bionics we are prepared to address them ”.

CDTI Innovation

The centre for technological development and innovation, CDTI E.P.E. is a public company under the ministry of Science, innovation and universities, whose goal is the promotion of technological innovation in business. The CDTI mission is to ensure that the business fabric english generates and transform knowledge into growth científico-técnico globally competitive, sustainable and inclusive. By 2024, within the framework of a new strategic plan, the CDTI provided more than $2.3 billion euros of support for business startups and spain.
